How NSET works — what I wish I knew
Format, cutoffs, Fast Track, and prep notes from a first-year SST student. Not affiliated with Scaler — just the guide I needed before my attempt.
Exam format & rules
Straight from Scaler's stated policy — double-check their site before your slot.
Format
Online, fully proctored
Device Required
PC or laptop with a working webcam — mobile phones are NOT allowed
Duration
2 hours (120 minutes)
Sections
Mathematics + Aptitude & Logical Reasoning
Cutoff Policy
Each section has its own individual cutoff — strong performance in one section does NOT compensate for failing the other
Attempts Allowed
Up to 3 NSET attempts per academic year (roughly once per month until exhausted)
Results
Typically released within ~2 weeks of the exam (Scaler's stated timeline)
Rescheduling
Allowed once, for a ₹200 fee, up to 24 hours before your slot
Reapplying
Voids your previous NSET application and score — only your latest attempt counts
Prep that actually matters
Both sections have individual cutoffs. Don't bank on crushing one and coasting on the other.
Mathematics
The maths section can be fairly difficult and has its own cutoff. Practice algebra, quantitative aptitude, and core Class XII concepts consistently — strength in reasoning alone will not save a weak maths score.
Logical Reasoning
Aptitude & Logical Reasoning also has an individual cutoff. Work on speed and accuracy with puzzles, patterns, and deduction drills so you clear both sections independently.
After the written exam
Candidates who clear NSET usually go through 2–3 interview rounds focused on mathematical reasoning, communication, and motivation. You can attempt the interview path up to 2 times per academic year.
Skip the written exam — Fast Track
If you already have strong JEE or SAT scores, you may skip NSET entirely and go straight to interviews.
JEE-based Fast Track
- •JEE Overall 92 percentile or above
- •JEE Mathematics 95 percentile or above
- •JEE Physics 95 percentile or above
Any one of these three JEE criteria qualifies you.
SAT-based Fast Track
- •SAT Overall score of 1430 or above
